Beaches
King Fisher Beach
King Fisher Beach is a great spot for a day in the sun. This beach park looking out over southern Matagorda Bay is a preferred gathering point for families or groups of friends, as well as those seeking a peaceful moment near the water.
Sunday Beach
Sunday Beach is an enjoyable spot at the northern end of the Matagorda Island along the waters of the immense Gulf of Mexico. Sunday Beach is great on a day trip for fishing or relaxing in the sun. The power of wind and waves creates a prime area for beachcombing or perhaps testing the waters with surf kayaking. Good paddling can also be had along the bay side of Matagorda Island. Those seeking a day of fun in the sun can surely find it at Sunday Beach.
Birding
Bird watching is growing in popularity with Port O’Connor being one of the best birding “hot spots” in the state. Some places to view birds in town are at the Nature Park at Boggy Bayou, King Fisher Beach, the Little Jetties, as well as walking the residential areas, concentrating on undeveloped lots and gardens with native vegetation and mulberry trees.
With a boat or kayak, one can bird watch along the Intracoastal Waterway, the Port O’Connor Paddling Trail, Sundown “Bird” Island, or the Matagorda Island Wildlife Management Area, which is noted in the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail for the more than 320 species of birds catalogued in the area.
Kayaking
Kayaking off Port O’Connor, Texas, affords an exciting experience to interact with the coastal habitat. Exploring the area in a kayak allows for a more relaxed pace, perfect for enjoying time outdoors. Paddling also provides the opportunity to exercise in a healthy and unique environment, outside and on your own time.
Matagorda Island
Many enjoyable features of Matagorda Island are only a boat ride away for Port O’Connor residents and visitors. Matagorda Island is a natural barrier between Port O’Connor and the Gulf of Mexico. Port O’Connor is located near the north end of this 38-mile-long island, which extends south to end near the Aransas Wildlife Refuge. Popular destinations on the island include Sunday Beach, the historic Matagorda Island lighthouse, and Matagorda Island Wildlife Management Area.
